VIRGINIA LOOKOUTS
PLEASANT SHADE
Brunswick County
October 1, 1933: "To assist in prompt location and subduing forest fires, Brunswick County agreed this week to a joint appropriation with Greenville County for the erection of a lookout tower near the borders of the two counties in the vicinity of Pleasant Shade.
According to Captain Kline, district fire warden, the spot selected is the highest point between Lawrenceville and Norfolk, and commands a wide area of territory. Captain Kline also said that approximately 60 percent of the fires in this section in recent years, had occurred within the area visible from the proposed tower.
According to statistics presented at the meeting, it appeared that 1,700 acres of timberland were burned in Brunswick County in one year, and that the cost of fighting these fires had been $5 per acre. Figures on the actual damage done by these fires was not available, but rough estimates place the damage at between $75,000 and $100,000." (The Times Dispatch)
