March 31, 1936: "The State Forestry commission last week purchased a six-acre tract of land, located on United State Highway No. 1, 3 miles north of Aiken, for the purpose of erecting thereon the fifth steel tower to be built in Aiken county in the program to protect county forests against fires.
The site occupies the highest point in Aiken County, and the tower to be erected will be 80 feet in height. On the same tract will be built a tower house and the necessary outbuildings for the towerman.
With the erection of the new tower on Highway No. 1, the county will be well protected from the standpoint of the fire prevention as similar towers now located at Wagener, Graniteville, Oskwood and Silverton.
The new tower is in the district of Ranger U.G. Ouattlebaum, of the Monetta section and a towerman will be named to have charge of the same as soon as the tower is erected." (Aiken Standard)
