July 29, 1948: "The State Division of Forestry in Cleburne County now has in sight the new equipment it has long been needing.
A 100-foot, steel lookout tower, a tractor, a ton and a half truck for transporting the tractor, and radio equipment have been ordered for this county to aid in the prevention of forest fires. It was announced by State Forest Ranger Leroy Taylor yesterday.
Eight thousand dollars was raised for the purchase of this equipment, Taylor said. Most of the money raised was from contributions by local sawmill and planing mill operators. The remainder came from Federal Funds appropriated to the state for this purpose.
Money for operating the new equipment is furnished by an appropriation of a thousand dollars a year from the County Commissioners.
The new tower is scheduled to be located at a point about four miles east of Edwardsville, according to Taylor.
He stated the need for one and possibly two more lookout towers for Cleburne County---depending on developments in adjoining counties. He expects to acquire these towers in the very near future." (The Anniston Star)
