July 1, 1938: "The State Conservation Commission has completed construction of a 100-foot lookout tower at Lyells, Richmond County, Route 3." (Northern Neck News)
July 14, 1955: "The last four wooden forest fire towers in the State of Virginia are being replaced this summer by steel towers. The only one of these in Tidewater Virginia, was pulled down Monday July 11. This tower was located at Lyells, Virginia in Westmoreland County on the farm of Bert Edwards.
It stood 120 feet tall, higher than any of the other fire towers in the Tappahannock District. On a clear day, both the Rappahannock and Potomac Rivers were visible from this tower. The tower was built in 1937 with C.C.C. labor. The timber used in the tower was creosoted pine, and much of it is still sound today.
Plans are already underway to replace the wooden tower with a new steel one. The cement piers will be poured the week of July 18, with the actual construction work being done in August, by the Virginia Forest Service." (Northern Neck News)
