NEW RIVER (starke)
Bradford County
September 27, 1957: "Construction of the fire tower for the Florida Forest Service's new Bradford County unit is scheduled to begin about Oct. 15, County Ranger Glenn R. Lewis said this week.
The clearing of the land in preparation for construction on the site six and a half miles west of Starke on SR 100 will begin next week.
Lewis said that funds have already been released for the moving and erection of the tower and the rest of the appropriation will be released on Oct. 1 so that construction of the rest of the station can follow soon after the tower is completed.
The tower now located on the Brooker road near New River will be moved to the new location for use in the new fire protection service, Lewis said. He estimated that the tearing down, moving and construction job will take about a week and a half.
It is important that the tower be erected first, Lewis said, so that centralized radio communication can be established for the Bradford County operation.
Other buildings to be erected are an office and shop structure, and three residences to house the ranger, towerman, and dispatcher and their families. When completed the Forest Service will have a staff of nine men in Bradford County, including the two towermen already stationed at the present Louis Hill and Santa Fe towers."
