SUGAR LOAF MOUNTAIN

October 28, 1921: "Value of the new forest fire tower on Sugar Loaf mountain, which gives a view of nearly three-fourths of the forestry area of Fayette county, was proved yesterday in the prompt discovery in the prompt discovery of a fire which had started in a brush heap some ten miles from the tower. The watchman at the tower detected the smoke and immediately notified the fire wardens and District Fire Inspector J.C. Beatty. The location was given by the watchman and fire wardens immediately located the fire after not more than fours after it started.
A watchman is on duty continuously at the new tower, living quarters being provided in a cabin at the foot of the tower. Telephone communication with the tower had been established by a four mile extension of telephone lines direct to the tower." (The Morning Herald)
