February 24, 1951: "A new forest fire observation tower to serve most of New London county is being constructed by the state forestry department on Stewart Hill near Wyassup lake.
The new tower, when completed will replace the one now located on Fort Hill just outside Mystic. Local forest fire wardens have expressed the hope that the new tower will be finished by March 1.
In the event that the new tower is not completed by that time, it was announced that the tower atop Fort Hill will be used until the new one is ready.
Spotters who will man the local tower will cooperate with those in towers at Norwich and Sterling in locating forest fires which break out in that area." (The Day)
