DRUMMOND
Chippewa County
May 5, 1966: "The grass fire on Drummond Island which burned 78 acres in the area around Corned Beef junction near the eastern end of the island is a good example of the cooperation between the conservation department and fire-conscious islanders. When Doug Bailey, emergency lookout at the Drummond tower, reported the fire, conservation men got in touch with Carl Bucht on the island immediately. He is what they call one of their 'key' men -- a non-conservation employe who is nevertheless available and willing to pitch in when an emergency arises, who knows the land and can get out a fire-fighting crew fast if needed. In this particular case the fire was skip-burning in grass and leaves and was extinguished with just the amount of water the conservation pickup was able to get to the scene. Jim Billings of Drummond Island, and fire officers Keith Garver of Goetzville and Ron Florenski of DeTour were called in and the blaze was put out in about four hours." (The Evening News)
