OVERLOOK MOUNTAIN

July 26, 1950: "Aaron Van De Bogart forest ranger of the New York State Conservation Department residing at Wittenberg, reports construction on a new all-steel fire tower on the most easterly point of Overlook Mountain. The road up from Mendes Mountain House to the summit of the mountain will be improved and maintained by the Conservation Department." (The Kingston Daily Freeman)
October 20, 1950: “Finishing touches are being put on the new fire tower being erected by the New York State Conservation department atop Overlook mountain. The tower, 70 feet in height, stands on the northeast tip of Overlook, within 60 feet of the old wooden structure which former guests used for observation. On a clear day it is possible to see a distance of 100 from the tower.” (Catskill Mountain News)
May 9, 1968: "The forest rangers cabin at Overlook Fire Tower on Mead Mountain, Town of Woodstock was broken into and a quantity of food stolen, it was reported to the County Sheriff's Office.
Forest Ranger John Baldwin reported the break-in after he had checked the cabin Wednesday afternoon. Sheriff's Deputies said entry was gained by prying the window open. A quantity of food was reported missing and a lamp broken. The incident is under investigation by Harold T. Bowers." (The Kingston Daily Freeman)
