MOXIE BALD MOUNTAIN
Maine - Somerset County - Maine Forestry District
1910: Established with a wood tower. (From the photo inventory of the Maine Historical Society.)
1917: "Frank W. Hilton, Bingham, Chief Warden, Upper Kennebec Region: During the season we have built a new night camp on Bald Mountain for the watchman, which was badly needed. We have shortened the line from night camp to the lookout camp on this mountain. We have changed the telephone wire running from Lake Moxie to Bald Mountain, changing the trail and cutting bushes.
On account of lightning striking the camp on Bald Mountain and doing considerable damage, I have had to replace many dishes and the windows and door. The stove was badly damaged, but we managed to make it do this season, but will have to have a new one next year." (Forest Protection and Conservation in Maine)
1918: The materials were purchased for a tower to be erected in 1919. (1918 Annual Report of the Forest Commissioner)
1919: A 12 foot steel tower was erected. (Forest Protection and Conservation in Maine)
August 9, 1919: "Steel towers were added: Moxie mountain, Bald Mountain Township, Somerset county, 12 feet high." (Daily Kennebec Journal)
June 4, 1924: "A report was received at the office of the state forestry department Tuesday of the finding of the body of Richard Morris, watchman at the lookout station on Moxie Bald Mountain, hanging in the lookout tower. Morris was a native of the Forks. The report to the forestry department was made by John Comber, chief warden at Parlin pond, and he and a party of men were understood to be on their way to the mountain to bring back the body. It is thought that Morris committed suicide, although he was not known to have any motive for so doing." (Biddeford Journal)
