February 22, 1929: "The Forest Service has just constructed a road which runs from the Kimsey Highway, near Jenkins Grave Gap, to the Sassafras Knob Lookout Tower on Little Frog Mountain in Polk County, Tennessee. The purpose of the road is to allow the lookout man to drive his auto up to the tower and to give the public the privilege of driving up to the tower to get the exceptional view of the mountains.
This new road is three-fourths of a mile long and on a seven per-cent grade. There is a loop at the lookout tower which enables the autoist to drive completely around the top of the mountain. Although the road is only nine feet wide there are frequent turn-outs to enable passing of automobiles.
The lookout man will be stationed at the tower during the dry periods of the year, and will distribute Forest Service literature to visitors." (The Cherokee Scout)
