May 2, 1924: "Lester Hughes, one of our town boys, was seriously injured on Tuesday afternoon while working on the fire tower, which is close to town. While coming down the tower a step broke, letting him fall to the ground, a drop of about 35 feet. He is in a very critical condition. The doctor thinks his skull is fractured, and perhaps several ribs broken." (Daily News)
