December 20, 1940: "Protection from forest fires will be extended to several hundred thousand acres of land in the vicinity of the Greene-Sullivan county state forest with the construction of a new fire tower at the state forest. Installation of the tower foundation has been started by WPA under the supervision of the division of forestry.
This tower will have a visibility radius of approximately 10 miles and will provide protection from forest fire for Shakamak State park as well as the Greene-Sullivan forest which is located southwest (actually southeast) of Sullivan. Private land will be the chief beneficiary from the extension of forest fire protection to this part of the state. Previously the only towers in this part of the state were those located near Cincinnati in Greene county and one at the Pike county state forest." (Hammond Times)
