1936-37: "FORESTRY ACTIVITIES: One 100-foot steel lookout tower and an observer's house have been constructed and 14 miles of metallic circuit telephone line built for fire protection purposes. To make the area accessible, 7 miles of park roads, 19 miles of truck trails and 25 miles of bridle paths have been built. The tops and branches remaining from former lumbering operations have been lopped and scattered on 2,890 acres to reduce the fire hazard." (A guide to forestry activities in N.C., S.C. and Tenn.)
