CATARACT
Indiana - Owen County - Owen State Forest
November 5, 1949: "Indiana's 24th fire tower is near completion in Owen county as the Hoosier fire season reached the acute stages. State Forester Ralph F. Wilcox pointed out, however, that there is need for at least 24 more towers, to provide adequate protection for Indiana's farm lands and timbered hillsides.
Towers, such as the one in Owen State Forest, are erected ar strategic points throughout the state to insure protection against fire for the areas concerned. In addition to the tower itself, land must be purchased, phone lines must be installed and often it is necessary to build a roadway to the tower. Construction of towers is just another of the many functions of the Division of Forestry.
The new tower will serve to protect the Cagles Mill flood control project and approximately 100,000 acres of land in Owen county. Foresters estimate that a towerman can see and detect fires occurring within a 12 mile radius of the tower.." (Tipton Tribune)
