October 4, 1932: "The new fire tower on the Fife Lake forest went into action for the first time Thursday, just five days after Assistant District Supervisor Ed Thalman and his helpers started work on it. This new tower will replace two of the old ones." (Record-Eagle)
December 6, 1956: "Conservation Department forest fire lookouts, kept busy by fires, low-flying planes, heavy winds and severe electrical storms, ran into another threat during hunting seasons this fall.
Lookouts Medford Moore and Rieno Narva, seasoned veterans of the Traverse City district fire detection system, were unwilling observers of wild shooting near their towers.
Moore reported that a man and a boy came out of the woods near his tower in Fife Lake state forest and set up a target on a nearby rock. While the two were shooting, a slug glanced off the rock and hit the tower cab. Before Moore could say a word the pair beat a hasty retreat into the woods." (Clare Sentinel)
