CRANE MOUNTAIN
Warren County
1918: A 35-foot steel tower was purchased. (8th Annual Report of the Conservation Commission)
April 15, 1919: "Work of erecting a lookout tower for the conservation commission on Crane mountain in Johnsburg is progressing favorably. The lookout will be of great value in detecting forest fires in the surrounding territory. It is of iron, 40 feet in height with an enclosed room at the top equipped with glass sides and a telephone connected with the control office in North Creek, eight miles distant.
The work of putting the structure up has been under the supervision of District Ranger P.J. Cunningham, assisted by C.S. Kenwell, Charles Barnes, Frank Noxon, and Charles Smith, forest rangers.
Crane mountain is the largest and highest mountain in Warren county and at its summit is a lake of clear water covering about 25 acres which has been well stocked with fish from the state hatchery." (The Post-Star)
August 23, 1929: "The fire was discovered early yesterday morning on state land by J.H. Adams, fire observer stationed on Crane Mountain. Adams broadcast the alarm and fire rangers, volunteers from nearby towns and crews of several logging camps rushed to the spot where they battled the fire through yesterday and last night under direction of Chief Fire Warden P.J. Cunningham of North Creek. The burned area is on Spruce mountain, more familiarly known to mountain dwellers and tourists as Huckleberry mountain." (The Kingston Daily Freeman)
