May 3, 1948: "The Forest Fire Service is erecting a new 100-foot steel lookout tower near Piper's Corner in the Medford Lakes area. The new tower will supplement the 60-foot tower at Retreat, in Southampton township.
Property owners in the Medford Lakes vicinity will be afforded more protection from fires originating in the Burlington county pines, Fire Warden William J. Seidel declared today.
The Corlen Engineering Co. of Collingswood is erecting the new tower. The cost is about $4500, Seidel said." (Courier-Post)
