1924: "Five new observation stations were established during the season of 1924. One station was built on Dix Hill in western Suffolk county, Long Island, and completed very early in the spring. Funds for this station were subscribed by an interested landowner in the vicinity of the station." (Conservation Commission Fourteenth Annual Report)
March 1933: "After a series of tests during the late fall of 1932. New York State has installed in the airplane which is used in State fire control work a 5-meter wave length receiving and transmitting radio station. By the use of this equipment 2-way continuous communication has been successfully maintained for a distance of 50 miles between the plane and a semiportable radio set erected in the Dix Hill fire tower in Suffolk County, N.Y. In the same locality, 1-way communication with the plane has been maintained for a distance exceeding 80 miles." (The Forest Worker)
June 8, 1945: "The Long Island State Park Commission announces that improvements will be made by the Conservation Department in the facilities for the prevention, detection and control of forest and brush fires on Long Island. These improvements were decided on after a recent inspection.
The proposed improvements include the moving of the present at Dix Hills to High Hill where additional height will provide greater coverage." (Suffolk County News)
