MACKINAC ISLAND
Mackinac County - State Department of Conservation
August 19, 1932: "The Michigan Department of Conservation has planned a fire tower of novel construction to be built at once on the highest point of Mackinac Island, near Fort Holmes.
Recognizing the importance of the Island's tourist traffic, the department will erect a steel structure 60 feet in height with a spiral staircase affording easy access to the top, whence a magnificent scenic view of the straits country may be enjoyed. The tower will afford protection to a vastly increased territory, including Les Cheneaux islands, Bois Blanc island, the shores of St. Martin's bay and the entire northern part of the lower peninsula." (The Bessemer Herald)
1931-32: "A tower located om Mackinac Island will be a 'key' tower on fires along the lake shore in the vicinity of Mackinaw City and St. Ignace. It will also act as a sightseeing and educational tower for the thousands of people who annually visit Mackinac Island. A great deal of 'fire propaganda' can be disseminated from this tower."
