KENTUCKY LOOKOUTS
CROFTON
Christain County
June 5, 1948: "Erection of a 60-foot fire lookout tower five and a half miles east of Crofton was under way today, District Forester E.R. Wagoner announced.
With the completion of the second tower in Christian County, observers will be able to keep watch over 85 per cent of the forest land in the district. There is one tower in Caldwell, two in Hopkins and two in Muhlenberg. The No. 2 tower in this county is located in the Pennyrile Park area.
Walter Green, superintendent of Maintenance and Construction of the Kentucky Division of Forestry, is in the county to supervise the work on the new tower, which is being placed on one of the highest points in the county--thus giving the observer a wide range.
The concrete foundation has been poured and the raising of the steel beams is under way. Several days will be required in the work.
The district forester said that there is a valuable stand of timber in this area--timber valuable for lumber. The forest area also helps control erosion and floods and furnishes protection for wildlife." (Kentucky New Era)
