VERMONT LOOKOUTS
ROBERT FROST MOUNTAIN
Addison County
July 29, 1921: "To guard the west side of the Battell range of timberland from fire destruction a lookout has been erected on Cogswell Hill at Bread Loaf in Ripton. The station, built in a large birch tree, commands a panoramic view of the entire college property, from Lincoln on the north, as far south as Goshen, and at least twice daily the patrolman of the Long Trail climbs into the tower to strain his vision over the vast tracts of valuable woodland to detect the signs of forest fire. The tower was built by the Vermont Timberland Owners Association, of which Middlebury College is a member.
The east side of the mountain range has been long protected by three watch towers erected by the Champlain Realty Company and the International Pulp Company. On the west side this safeguard had not been established until the present structure was made early this month." (Middlebury Register)
