BOYER'S KNOB
Pennsylvania - Northumberland County
October 6, 1921: "The State Forestry Department has begun the erection of a sixty-seven foot fire tower on Boyer's Knob, south of this borough." (The Wilkes-Barre Record)
November 7, 1922: "John Deitrich, of the forestry department at Harrisburg, has been placed in charge of the forest fire tower at Boyer's Knob on the Mahanoy Mountain and asks the hunters and all others to co-operate with him in preventing forest fires. From the tower he can see for a radius of 50 miles. As soon as he discovers a fire he telephones to fire wardens." (Mount Carmel Item)
March 17, 1927: "Preparations for the spring fire season have been practically completed and the forest officers of the Weiser forest district expect to have a towerman on Boyer's Knob tower on the Mahanoy mountain within the next few days.
The Boyer's Knob tower, which is south of Shamokin, was erected by the Pennsylvania department of forests and waters and is a steel structure 47 feet in heighth. The elevation of the mountain upon which the tower stands is 1,805 feet and a wonderful view of the surrounding country can be obtained from this point.
Throughout the fire season, which generally begins in March and ends in June, a towerman is on duty at the Boyer's Knob tower and reports all fires observed. Visitors are welcome at the tower at all times and when not employed in his duties of reporting forest fires, the towerman will point out all interesting points as seen from the tower. M.C. Beck of Shamokin, who has been the towerman on Boyer's Knob tower for the past three years will again assume the duties of towerman this spring.
H.Y. Forsyth of Shamokin, forest inspector of the Weiser forest district and in charge of forest protection work and forestry activities in Northumberland county, states that the dry condition of the woods at this time of the year creates a severe fire hazard, and urges all persons who go into the woods to use extreme care with their matches and cigarettes." (Shamokin News-Dispatch)
August 4, 1930: "So serious has the situation become that the forest fire tower on Boyer's Knob has been re-opened to maintain a watch for further fires. It is the first time since its erection that the Boyer's knob tower has been open at this season of the year, it is said.
John A. Scott, Jr., who is in charge of the tower, was called from a vacation trip to Baltimore yesterday, to take up his duties at the tower and will remain there until the much desired rains remove further danger of fire." (Shamokin News-Dispatch)
October 7, 1933: "Two groups of men are at work in forests of the county aiding fire- prevention through their activities.
The closest group is engaged in driving a new fire lane from Boyer's Knob, south of Shamokin, to the Henry Clay colliery. The lane, which will be fourteen feet wide, will be paralleled when completed by a new telephone line to the lookout tower on Boyer's Knob." (Mount Carmel Item)
