May 1, 1964: "The 100-foot Cypress Gardens Fire Tower, one of eight lookout towers strategically located throughout Polk County, is now complete.
It's part of the Florida Forest Service's forest fire detection system. Although just completed, it is already manned and fire direction readings are being coordinated with the Polk County Headquarters Tower just south of Lakeland.
The steel lookout tower, located on SR540-A just east of Cypress Gardens, is part of the sub-office, shop and two house complex in this area.
Living on the site when construction is complete, will be a towerman, assistant county ranger and their families.
Also working from this station will be a roving ranger and his assistant. A pick-up tanker and a four-wheel drive tanker will make up the woodfire suppression equipment located at the station." (Lakeland Ledger)
