ALABAMA LOOKOUTS
LAWRENCE
Covington County
August 17, 1926: "Piers have been set for an 80 foot high steel, forest fire lookout tower, which will be located on what is known as Panther Creek Hill, in Covington county, it was announced Monday by Colonel Page S. Bunker, state forester. The tower site is on the Florala-Kinston highway.
The location of the tower, comprising 40 acres of land, was donated to the state commission of forestry by public spirited landowners, Colonel Bunker said. From Panther Creek Hill a large area of forest and woodland is visible even from the ground level, it is stated, and with the 80 feet of additional height provided by the tower, the range of observation will be very greatly increased, with the result that it will be much easier to detect forest fires in their early stages, at a distance. The tower will be connected with neighboring telephone lines, so that the observer can more readily communicate with landowners in the event that fires are discovered on their holdings.
Concrete work on the piers for the tower, has been completed under the direction of State Forest Ranger W. E. Jordan assisted by Forest Agent H.F. Smith and various local residents. The work of erecting the steel structure will be started as soon as the piers have become thoroughly seasoned, probably within the next two weeks, it is stated." (The Montgomery Advertiser)
