Montmorency County - State Department of Conservation
1921: A steel tower was erected. (Biennial Report - The Department of Conservation - 1922)
May 28, 1937: "Michigan's old-style 60-foot fire towers with their open platforms are gradually being replaced by the modern 100-foot towers having enclosed cabins and inside stairways.
The latest 60-footer to go is the one about 10 miles north of Atlanta in Montmorency county. A 100 foot fire tower is being erected by CCC men from Camp Presque Isle to take its place." (Lake County Star)
May 12, 1939: "Charles Cole of Onaway, a former fire tower guard for the state conservation department, was to be taken to state police headquarters at Lansing today for lie-detector tests in connection with investigation of the recent forest fire here.
Cole, questioned at Onaway by state police yesterday, denied any knowledge of the origin of the blaze which swept over 100,000 acres last week end.
Authorities suspect the fire was started by an incendiarist." (Marshall Evening Chronicle)
