October 27, 1934: "The Mohican Tower at the Mohican State Forest near Loudonville in Ashland county, forms the nucleus of a new fire protection unit not as yet organized. The tower will be occupied this season by James Stevenson, the caretaker of that property." (Chillicothe Gazette)
November 4, 1940: "A forest fire on the Kate Ackerman farm, south of Loudonville on the Ball-Ally road yesterday afternoon, swept through four acres of timber before being brought under control by volunteer firemen.
The blaze was discovered shortly before 3 p.m. by James Stevenson, state forest ranger, from his lookout tower at Mohican state park.
Stevenson summoned about 30 neighbors, supplying them with fire fighting equipment used by the CCC unit at the park. Several back fires were started and two hours later the blaze was brought under control.
Stevenson said he believed the fire was started from a lighted cigaret tossed from an automobile by a passing motorist." (Mansfield News Journal)
March 25, 1967: "During the warm spring days when there is a possibility of a fire occurring, the forest is under constant surveillance by the observer in the Mohican Fire Tower, Mrs. Elmina Rohrbaugh. Mrs. Rohrbaugh has been employed since 1949 and is well acquainted with the area. This knowledge saves valuable time in dispatching men and equipment to the exact location of a fire." (News Journal)
