May 4, 1933: "The Barton township fire tower opened Sunday with John Spalo as fire warden." (Osceola County Herald)
May 30, 1935: "Michael Byrne has been assisting in the fire tower in Barton township the past few days." (Osceola County Herald)
1937-38: “The major accomplishments are: Cooperating in the expansion and improvement of the Forest Fire Divisions detection system. The CCC has built eight new fire towers and structurally repaired 63 of the present towers.” One of the new towers is located at the Barton site. June 16, 1938: "Formerly known as the Barton Tower, located south of Chase, Mich., the tower was moved to its new location 4 miles south of Luther to provide protection for the high, rolling area of wild land there. Dismantling at the Barton site and erection of the tower framework was accomplished by Camp Houghton Lake in cooperation with Camp Bitely last fall." (Clare County Cleaver)
