MICHIGAN LOOKOUTS
GILCHRIST
Mackinac County
May 29, 1937: "The tanker Boyd was reported on fire this morning, the report coming from Frank Fitzpatrick, towerman at Gilchrist. The Boyd, loaded with gasoline, went aground on a reef near Brevort last winter and thousands of people took part in the salvaging of the cargo, several losing their lives when an explosion, believed caused by static or sparks from a tug exhaust. From the Gilchrist tower, about 22 miles away, the smoke was first noted at 7:40 a.m. and flames broke through about 10:30. The towerman reports that he can see no other boats near by."
