November 25, 1936: "A crew of 23 CCC enrollees from Camp Webster and several local residents battled a woods fire which threatened several homes two miles from South Webster Tuesday.
The fire broke out between Hope Hollow and Hales Creek late in the afternoon. As the visibility was extremely poor, the Lookout Tower at Simmering Ridge, manned by CCC's from the Webster camp, was unable to sight the fire. Local residents including E.C. Turner, owner of part of the burned land, and several others fought the advancing flames to prevent them from destroying several houses.
At 5:45 p.m. word of the fire was brought to Camp Webster. Four minutes later a crew of 23 men led by Jr. Forester Wayne Banks was on its way to the site." (Portsmouth Times)
