June 27, 1948: "Cheaha Mountain marks the highest point above sea level in Alabama. It is 2,407 feet high and the beautiful stone lookout tower, visible for miles around, increases the height several feet. Cheaha Park comprises 2,679 acres and is easily one of the most outstanding of Alabama's mountain parks.
For the pleasure of visitors, there are 11 attractive cabins built of native stone, picnic facilities and plenty of places to fish and swim. The water reservoir near the top of the mountain is the highest impounded body of water in the State. At the west base of Cheaha Mountain is a lake which has been impounded for bathing, with a large stone bathhouse on the banks. There is a good beach, and two picnic areas, one adjacent to the lake and one on top of the mountain near the tower.
Like other parks, the plan of development of Cheaha included the preservation of the natural and primitive rather than its obliteration. To this end large areas are reserved for hiking and the road system within the park has been held to a minimum consistent with reaching the areas of more intensive use." (The Anniston Star)
