April 11, 1922: "The Anthracite Forest Protective Association has completed the erection of a fifty-foot steel lookout tower on Flagstaff Mountain at Mauch Chunk, 900 feet above the Lehigh River and 1,600 feet above tidewater." (The Wilkes-Barre Record)
1922: "A 42-foot steel tower with enclosed cab was erected and placed in commission during the spring fire season. The Flag Staff Tower, is situated 1500 feet west of Flag Staff Park above the Borough of Mauch Chunk in Carbon County. One-half the cost was refunded by the Department of Forestry. The Flag Staff line connects at Flag Staff Park with the Consolidated and was put up by the Forestry Department employees during the fall.
A double-faced sign, 4 x 6 feet, was erected beside the highway near the Flag Staff Tower. The sign serve to call attention to the traveling public to the towers themselves and their purpose, and also act as a fire warning." (Forest Leaves, V.19)
