May 13, 1940: "It required work by a crew of state forest fire fighters from 2:45 p.m. until 9 o'clock last night to bring the blaze under control. S. Aubrey Pry, towerman at the Mauch Chunk fire tower, who sent out the crew, said last night the cause of the outbreak is believed due to careless fishermen.
The Mauch Chunk fire tower fought eight fires yesterday and Pry was on duty from 9 a.m. until late last night. Some timber was burned in the Walcksville fire, though not much of value, Pry said." (The Morning Call)
May 6, 1943: "A blazing forest fire swept over 200 acres of State timberland at Mauch Chunk yesterday. The fire, which started about 1 o'clock in the afternoon, was not brought under control by the 60 fire fighters until about 7 o'clock last night.
The fire surrounded the fire tower which was being manned at the time by Eleanor Steidle, East Mauch Chunk, tower observer. The fire fighting was under the direction of Righter Reabold, Upper Mauch Chunk, State fire inspector, and Warren Burkert, Pottsville, district fire inspector." (The Morning Call)
