March 3, 1939: "Hello Central, give me a line to the Moddersville Fire Tower' will soon become a request of ordinary usage among the Conservation Department's Field men. Enrollees of Camp Houghton Lake are this week beginning construction of six miles of telephone line from the Moddersville tower to the main line at Camp Houghton Lake. Poles for the project have been procured from nearby swamp land and are being peeled by a crew of enrollees at the camp.
Michigan State CCC boys have during the past six years constructed a network of telephone lines linking forest fire towers, Refuge Headquarters, State Forest Headquarters and Field Administration Headquarters into a system of effective communication which is of paramount importance in the efficient handling of forest fire and other emergencies. Enrollees from Camp Houghton Lake along have constructed thirty miles of line and this work is part of the program of all Michigan State CCC camps." (Clare Sentinel)
