March 5, 1966: "The fire tower at Benevola was a 10-ton steel structure soaring 100 feet in the air. The tower was ripped from it's foundation and carried about 100 to 150 feet from the foundation. It was a mass of twisted steel and Smith (Lambert Smith, district forester) said it was doubtful if any of the parts could be salvaged for future use.
The forester said the steel tower was built to withstand winds up to 120 miles per hour." (The Tuscaloosa News) (see 'Westervelt' for more of the story.)
