c.1943: Army funding was used to construct three temporary lookout towers for fire protection, one of which was the Niges Cliff tower on the Potomac Ranger District south of U.S. Route 33 on North Mountain. This tower was constructed primarily to protect the additional land the Forest Service was responsible for in the war years when the Army used the area for training purposes. (Monogahela National Forest 1915 - 1990, USDA Forest Service)
1944: The Niges Cliff lookout was transferred to the State of West Virginia. (Monogahela National Forest 1915 - 1990, USDA Forest Service)
