May 21, 1931: "Chap King. local chief fire warden, who lately located in, the city, is responsible for the statement that some time in the next month or so a fifty foot steel lookout tower will be erected on a high point in the neighborhood of where the State Highway passes over it. In case this is done, a watchman will occupy the tower, during the dangerous forest fire season, to give alarm if fire breaks out in the nearby regions. It is claimed that only six other similar towers have been erected in this end of the state. For years forest fires have been our most destructive menace and it is time that every means possible be used to prevent destruction's like these in the future." (The Mountain Eagle)
