September 9, 1934: "One of the longest 'shots' of a fire on record in Michigan was made by the towerman at Cedar tower near Traverse City, according to the Department of Conservation. The towerman sighted a fire near the lower Manistee-Wexford county line, 62 miles distant." (The Escanaba Daily Press)
October 14, 1937: "There is a fire tower on the hill to the south of Maple City from which a comprehensive view of the country may be had. The fire tower, 82 feet in height, was formerly located on a hill north of Glen Lake and was moved to its present location in 1928. It is called the Cedar tower." (Leelanau Enterprise)

March 5, 1953: "The Conservation Department reports that so far Leelanau County has neither a watchman for the fire tower near Maple City nor a fire officer for this year. Both are civil service positions.
