November 22, 1928: "The new Tioga district 80-foot forest fire observation tower is practically complete, with the exception of windows, as the odd-size glass makes it necessary to order these sizes cut to dimension. This tower is situated half a mile from the main township road at the top of Buck Run mountain, between the towns of Cedar Run and Waterous. A good road leads directly to the tower." August 13, 1925: "In the State Forestry Department's list of new fire towers to be erected is one between Smethport and Port Allegany in McKean county. This tower will probably be placed in the Bush Hill neighborhood and observers will command a wide stretch of country. All the towers are connected with a telephone system that is bound to help in the prevention and extinguishing of fires from the fact that all can be summoned over a wide area of country and if one neighborhood cannot furnish the desired help it will be easy to call upon another. The establishment of the tower between Smethport and Port Allegany will make a total of seven within a fifty mile radius of Kane. The fire tower for the Highland district near here is now in process of erection." (McKean County Democrat)

November 5, 1952: "An 80-foot fire tower will be built on Chestnut Ridge along the Springfield-Connellsville Township line, half a mile south of Route 711, District Forester Loren R. Brown announced.
The tower will replace Banning Knob lookout and serve as a key observation point for forest fires in Northern Fayette and Southern Westmoreland Counties. It will be linked by radio with the three steel 80-foot towers at Jumonville, Pond Field and Sugar Loaf Knob, near Ohiopyle.
Forest Inspector George B. Martin will direct erection of the tower, which is being moved from a site near Marienville." (The Charleroi Mail)
