COGSWELL HILL
Vermont - Vermont Timberland Owners Association
July 29, 1921: "To guard the west side of the Battell range of timberland from fire destruction a lookout has been erected on Cogswell Hill at Bread Loaf in Ripton. The station, built in a large birch tree, commands a panoramic view of the entire college property, from Lincoln on the north as far south as Goshen, and at least twice daily the patrolman of the Long Trail climbs into the tower to strain his vision over the vast tracts of valuable woodland to detect the signs of a forest fire. The tower was built by the Vermont Timberland Owners Association, of which Middlebury College is a member.
Middlebury College has stationed one of her best athletes to act as summer guard of her timber and to assist the numerous hikers over the Long Trail. Charles Reinbrecht of football fame is the patrolman who tramps back and forth from Sucker Brook Lodge to the Emily Proctor Lodge, instructing hikers in the saner methods of building camp fires." (Middlebury Register)
