JACKIE JONES
New York - Rockland County
November 19, 1932: "Each corner of Rockland County was represented when twenty-one members of the Rockland County Conservation Association met Thursday at Cobblestone Farm, the Suffern residence of Mrs. Henry von L. Meter for its November session. The meeting was a revelation to some of the members who, despite their interest in conserving the beauties of the county, were unaware of the fact that a fire ranger and a forest fire observer are maintained here.
Mr. John Dempsey, the Ranger, and Mr. Roy Sherwood, the observer both were present at the meeting and in an interesting and graphic manner told of their work. Mr. Sherwood is stationed in the Gate Hill mountain tower known as the 'Jackie Jones Tower' which rises 1,300 feet above sea level. He serves there nine hours daily from April until November and he stated yesterday is able to 'spot' a fire in any part of the county from the tower." (Rockland County Journal-News)
