May 13, 1930: "Arrangements have been completed for the erection of the twenty-first fores fire lookout tower in the State primary fire detection system, the latest unit to be constructed in the western part of Columbus County near Chadbourn, it was announced yesterday at the Department of Conservation and Development. C. H. Flory, assistant forester in charge of the fire control says the tower will probably be placed about two miles east of Chadbourn.
The structure will be of steel construction, 100 feet in height and will have an inside stairway. A station for a fire lookout will be in an enclosed cabin at the top of the shaft. The lookout will have a range of vision of about 15 miles radius in all directions." (The Charlotte News)

August 4, 1931: "The erection of a 100-foot high steel forest fire observation tower near state highway number twenty, one mile east of Chadbourn has been completed. It is the 22nd unit in a proposed state-wide system of 125.
Charles H. Flory, assistant forester of the state department of conservation said the department plans to complete the fire state department as rapidly as funds are made available for that purpose." (The Bee - Virginia)
September 1931: "Completion of a 100-foot steel lookout tower in Columbus County, N.C., about 1 mile east of Chadbourn on State Highway No. 20, adds the twenty-second link to the State's proposed primary detection system of 125 towers. The site of the tower was given to the State by C.R. Bailey, of Chadbourn." (The Forest Worker)
