GILE MOUNTAIN

1940: "The Plymouth CCC Camp has constructed a steel lookout tower, lookout cabin and latrine building on Gile Mt. in Norwich and built 1.5 miles of telephone line to the lookout tower." (Report of the Department of Conservation and Development" State of Vermont, term ending June 30, 1940)
1949 - 1950: "Marked the course of underground telephone line. Replaced 5 stair treads damaged by hedgehogs and painted stair treads and cabin floor. Cleaned and varnished inside walls of cabin. Outside of cabin stained. Installed new stove." (Biennial Report of the Vermont Forest Service)
1951 - 1952: "Tower stairs and cab painted, new metal roof. Cabin floor refinished, roof stained. Part of trail relocated, yard leveled and reseeded." (Biennial Report of the Vermont Forest Service)
1953 - 1954: "The gradual discontinuance of secondary lookout towers and the expanding use of planes on fire detection patrol continues. During the biennium the fire lookout towers at Gile Mountain in Norwich and Monadnock Mountain in Lemi8ngton have been discontinued although they could again be put in commission if needed." 1957 - 1958: "The lookout facilities at the secondary stations of Ascutney, Gile. Glastenbury and Monadnock Mountains were continued on an inactive basis with the areas being covered in hazardous weather by flights of the plane patrol." (Biennial Report of the Vermont Forest Service)
