November 22, 1938: "Assistant State Forester Walter J. Quick, Jr., said yesterday that a 60-foot steel forest fire lookout tower would be erected on Red Hill mountain, overlooking Antietam Battlefield.
The $2,500 tower will be erected at McClelland's lookout, 1,040 feet above sea level, and a Civil War signal post. Work on the tower, to begin soon, will be done by CCC enrolls.
Clayton Phillips, forest guard, will be posted at the tower." (Hagerstown Morning Herald)

November 25, 1938: "The Maryland Forest Service is to build a 60-foot steel fire lookout tower on Red Hill mountain, overlooking Antietam battlefield. Red Hill mountain was General McClellan's look-out post during the Civil War battle of Antietam. It is 1020 feet above sea level.
