SHEFFIELD
Pennsylvanis - Warren County
August 21, 1925: "The work of erecting the two steel fire towers. located at Torpedo and Sheffield, in Warren county, is progressing satisfactorily. Last week the work of laying the cement foundations took the greater part of the time of the workmen and it is expected that the steel girders will be placed in position as soon as the cement has set. Through the co-operation of the district forestry office and the state Warren county was allotted two new towers this year. With her many acres of valuable timber, every precaution against the dreaded monster is being taken by local and state officials." (Titusville Herald)
August 4, 1960: "The month of April on the Sheffield District of the Allegheny National Forest showed on the debit side of the ledger that two picnic tables were completely destroyed at Morrison Run Picnic Area; a gas line that supplied Sheffield Lookout Tower with bottled gas was shot in half with a rifle bullet; a fireplace was stolen from a roadside picnic spot on the Mayburg Road; and a rash of new garbage dumps among the wildflowers polluted the view from roads and streams." (The News-Herald)
June 4, 1971: "News that the Sheffield Lookout Tower has been sold, and will be dismantled this summer may cause mixed emotions among some Sheffield residents. Sheffield Tower has been a landmark since 1930, and during its 41 years of service hundreds of visitors have climbed the steep stairs to the tiny cab perched 93 feet in the air. They have always been welcome when a lookout was on duty in the spring and fall fire seasons. And many Sheffield youngsters have had their first practical lessons in forest fire prevention when they visited this fire tower.
Originally a State Tower, under the jurisdiction of the Pennsylvania Department of Forests and Waters, it was transferred to the U.S. Forest Service around 1954 in exchange for Coal Knob Tower--a Forest Service installation." (Warren Times-Mirror and Observer)
