KENTUCKY LOOKOUTS
WILDLIFE REFUGE
Trigg County
April 7, 1942: "Burning of a 60-foot lookout tower used by state fire wardens on the government-owned woodland wild life refuge in Trigg county was reported to state forestry headquarters here today.
State Forester Kenneth G. McConnell said oil soaked rags appeared to have been used to start the fire during the temporary absence late yesterday of a state fire watcher and that it was believed moonshiners has destroyed the structure, fearing their operations would be spotted from it.
There have been no forest fires in that vicinity since last Thursday, he added.
The steel tower had a wooden ladder and a wooden cabin for the fire warden and the flames were believed to have started at the top of the ladder. H.B. Newland, assistant state forester, left to investigate the case and to arrange for a new outlook point for the refuge which the state protects." (The Paducah Sun-Democrat)
