September 9, 1971: "Bids for the removal of the Silver Mountain Lookout Tower have been sent out to interested parties, according to an announcement by Ottawa National Forest Supervisor Joseph H. Harn.
The Silver Mountain Tower, located on the top of Silver Mountain, about 8 miles east of L'Anse, Michigan, is a wooden structure which was erected in 1940. It is 40 feet high and is the last remaining wooden fire tower located in the Ottawa National Forest.
Recently, more modern methods of fire detection employing aircraft have been used which make fire towers almost obsolete.
Anyone interested in bidding on the Silver Mountain Lookout Tower should contact the Forest Supervisor, Ottawa National Forest, in Ironwood, Michigan." (The Wakefield News) (Note: The story indicates that the tower was east of L'Anse, when actually it was to the west)
