HARTWICK
Osceola County
June 25, 1925: “Hartwick township in this county is to have a fire tower. The tower will be located on Section 32, south and west of Long Lake. It is to be of steel, 63 feet high, and 14 ½ x 14 ½ base, set in concrete and thoroughly braced. The cost of the tower when installed is about $1,000.
At the top of the tower will be a room 8 x 8 feet, for the lookout, who will be on duty a greater part of the time when necessary. The point selected is one of the highest points of land in the county, and from it a full view may be had over several townships, which are located in the section where forest fires are liable to do the most harm in this county.
The observer has a telephone at hand, and when smoke is seen he immediately notifies some one whose job it is to investigate. Several of these towers are being located where they may be readily reached for immediate investigation, the importance of the service being promptness and quick service before fire is allowed to gain much headway.
This county is located in district 13, comprising counties of Osceola, Mecosta, Lake, Mason and Manistee with Game Warden William C. Kidder in charge.” (Osceola County Herald)
