April 2, 1964: "The Florida Forest Service tomorrow will unveil the first of three fire towers planned for Collier County.
The Forest Service is openly 'tickled pink' with the 100-foot lookout tower now ready for use about 16 miles southeast of Naples on U.S. 41.
Friday's grand opening for the tower crowns a long-time battle by the Forest Service to spread its protective wing in Collier County. After some years of indecision.
The tower just completed east of Naples will be open to visitors all day Friday, with the first 100 people to climb the tower receiving 'Towernaut' certificates. (The Daily News)
