STAR LAKE
Newaygo County - Manistee National Forest
April 23, 1926: "L. L. Duffing has been appointed fire lookout here, but has not been ordered into service as yet. A request to Chief Warden Kidder resulted in the statement that Lansing would not give orders for tower service just yet. Wednesday the Baldwin Commercial Club and ten or more individuals wired the department appealing for immediate tower service, but no response has been received as yet.
Commencement of tower service should be left to local wardens. In different communities conditions vary. Had tower service been opened, the Star Lake fire would have been spotted and extinguished before it had covered an acre. The pay of the towerman saved these two weeks is spent several times over for men to fight the fires, not to mention the men who volunteered.
Unless the state authorizes lookout service at once, Baldwin business men will pay a man and post him in the tower until the state opens its schedule." (Lake County Star)

April 14, 1939: "Robert DeLong and mother, Mrs. Mae DeLong will move to Star Lake next week, where Robert has a position in the fire tower. They will occupy the cottage on the grounds." (Lake County Star)
